The consensus of medical opinion suggests that orally-administered bromelain, taken on an empty stomach, exerts a salutary effect on recovery and healing in cases of inflammation, injuries and tissue traumas of various kinds, including post-operative problems. Bromelain, taken with meals, acts as a protease, enhancing the release of short peptides and amino acids from food proteins. For anti-inflammatory effect, it must be taken on an empty stomach. BromInj supplies a complex of protease with nutrients and other factors known to modulate the metabolism of prostanoids in a manner that favors the resolution of inflammation. Curcumin, a plant pigment derived from tumeric, reduced edema and wound tenderness in a controlled study of surgery patients. Bioflavonoids and vitamin C have been used clinically to effectively reduce recovery time in injured athletes. Willow bark provides naturally-occurring salicylates, which inhibit the catabolism of tryptophan in the blood; these actions enhance the delivery of tryptophan to the brain and increase serotonin synthesis, which is required for normal mood.
